The long-awaited launch of the X TV app is getting closer and closer. Shortly after Elon Musk posted a 12-second teaser on X, an update to the iOS app was released which allows videos from the X Platform to be played on Chromecast devices. The feature will be the preparation for the X TV video platform, which it seems will be integrated into the X Platform.

What we already know about the X TV app:

The X TV Platform will be a video streaming service like YouTube with a focus on long form video content. At the moment it is already possible to post videos of any length on X, but these are lost in the daily stream. This problem seems to be a thing of the past with the newly announced platform.

Linda Yaccarino already gave a little insight into the platform with a 10-second video on April 23. The video shows the X TV homepage with the categories “Trending” and “For you”. The first impression is very clear and, as announced, very similar to YouTube and other video platforms.

On April 29, Elon Musk then posted a video from DogeDesigner, which clearly announces the X TV app.

Shortly afterwards, the news that you can now stream videos from the X app to the Smart TV:

Why another video streaming platform?

When Elon Musk took over Twitter in April 2022, he announced his plans to turn Twitter into an “Everything” app.

He described Twitter, which he quickly renamed to “X”, as the digital “Town Square” but that should be a thing of the past and in the future X should compete with YouTube, LinkedIn, Facetime, dating apps and the entire digital banking complex.

Even in 2024, the rebranding process to X is still not completed. Users who access the short message service via the browser will continue to see the “Twitter.com” domain in their address bar. But a lot has happened since the takeover.

Shortly after the acquisition, Musk integrated a premium subscription model for users. With the premium membership it was no longer only possible to publish short messages but also to post endlessly long texts. The aim of the whole thing is to increase the length of stay of the users to X. This was followed by a limit removal for uploaded videos as well as the integration of a TikTok like video stream.

Spaces followed in December 2023, which could be used to publicly discuss topics via group calls. Elon Musk probably copied the function from the popular Clubhouse app where celebreties can discuss topics publicly with their fans listening. Elon Musk himself joined already several spaces with serious topics.

Spaces were the pioneers of video and audio calls, which were integrated into the “Everything” platform in 2024.

At the same time in March 2024, Musk announced that X TV would be released soon.

The offensive against LinkedIn began on May 1st, 2024. At 10:15pm @XHiring posted the following post which was shared by Linda Yaccarino (CEO X) teasing “Job recommendation”:

X has been fighting for freedom of expression ever since. As is well known, this is neglected on other platforms and critical voices are summarily expelled from the platform. X TV could therefore become a starting point, especially for critical personalities, and a serious alternative to the much criticized online video service Rumble.

Conclusion

Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, the platform has gained incredible momentum and expanded into all online areas. For many users, the X TV platform will be a pure consumption platform, but it also opens up new opportunities for influencers and content creators. Will you take the chance and offer your videos there? We can definitely be seen on X TV.
